There’s something heartening when a discipline that’s two and a half millennia old so readily embraces digital studies and Kanye West without losing its focus on Gorgias or hillbillies. Well done, Rhetoric Society of America.

The biennial RSA Conference, in Philly this year, was themed around “Re/framing identifications,” which should tell you something about rhetoricians: they love to embrace the third canon (style) and play with titles. That’s good news for fans of (A)cademic (T)itles, and so here are my favorite presentation titles plucked from this year’s conference program. These are in no particular order, and “favorite” can mean “clever use of wordplay” or “egregious abuse of academese so esoteric that no one will ever care about what you publish” or sometimes a 3rd nonsensical category that just strikes me the right way.

Where has he got this notion from? A once carefully qualified statement in some research paper has now become a blind article of faith. True enough there is research on the effectiveness of such colonic titles, but it is not that convincing. But rumour and hearsay are powerful things.”

Ah, pop culture. Perhaps no other field of study provides such a bountiful harvest of real academic paper titles, and there’s no bigger conference for these folks to get together than the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association’s annual meeting. The 42nd iteration of this hermeneutic hoedown took place in Boston this year, with the absolutely terrific George Takei giving the keynote address.

This popped up on my radar this morning courtesy of @jonbecker, an assistant professor of ed leadership at VCU. I appreciate the link more than the endorsement (though I’m certainly glad for the latter), even if it is a little more mean-spirited than what I go for.

Becker tweeted to make the case that we should make our research more accessible, and I think most in the academe would agree (save for Deleuzians, perhaps), though I’d be remiss to point out that if all scholarship was more accessible, transparent, and plainly titled, it would significantly affect my crop of [real] titles to harvest from each conference and journal.
